Other Characters: N/A
Character Name: Stanley Pines
Series: Gravity Falls
Age: 66, fifteen minutes younger than his twin brother Ford.
From When?: Post-canon, a week or two into his voyage with Ford.
Inmate/Warden: Warden - It's something that might come as a surprise (particularly to Stan himself) given the amount of time he's spent in prison over the years, but he would make a better warden than inmate. He's gotten himself into a lot of hot water in his lifetime, but it puts him in a unique position to relate to others who are down on their luck. He can be stern, particularly when it's for someone's own good, and he's not afraid to put his foot down and say what needs to be said. He also knows the difference between getting into trouble because you don't have any options left and getting in trouble because trouble can be fun sometimes. He's learned a lot of life lessons the hard way, and will gladly point at himself and say "See this?? You don't wanna be this."
He's definitely capable of helping an inmate graduate, especially if it's someone he's become emotionally invested in - he's a big ol' softy at heart, so even though he has his own reasons for becoming a warden he will still genuinely care about whether his inmate graduates or not. Plus, if he can't help then he's going to feel like a failure for the millionth time in his life, and he can't have that!
Item: A palm sized hand bearing compass, since he's just come from ocean adventures. In order to use one of these little puck-shaped models, you have to hold it up to your eye to read it (like so), but instead of showing the bearing it will give him information like where his inmate is, etc.
Arrival: N/A - Warden
Abilities/Powers: He doesn't have any magical abilities, and for all intents and purposes he is a regular human being. He is, however, a lot stronger than he looks and throws a mean left hook. On top of that he's much more clever than he gives himself credit for. He's been shown to be able to lucidly dream and manipulate what his canon calls the "mindscape", and he used this ability to trick Bill Cipher into his own demise. He's also street smart and very hard to trick - it's hard to con a conman!
Personality: A significant portion of Stan's personality is defined by him being Ford's twin brother. They were two halves of a whole, and Ford was Stan's only friend. However, Ford is brilliant and next to him Stan was always treated as an idiot who could never compare - to the point where he really started to believe it. He just accepted that he was never going to be good at school, so he stopped trying. Their father Filbrick was very difficult to impress, and it frequently felt like Stan was in a competition against Ford he could never win.
Still, Stan always held his father in high esteem and respect, which has led to a lot of issues over the years. Even though his father kicked him out of the house before 18 and told him he wasn't welcome back until he made a fortune to make up for the fortune he'd cost Ford by breaking his project, Stan never blamed him for it. Instead he just tied up all of his self-worth for decades in his ability to make money, and any time he failed at that he'd think about how his father was right about him all along.
As one could imagine from this, Stan doesn't have very high self-esteem. He acts like he does, sure, but he doesn't actually consider himself to be good at many things. On top of that, the things he is good at all involve lying and cheating and stealing, or at least that's how it feels. He doesn't expect to succeed at most things, and has a tendency to hide his endeavors if he's really trying at something that's important to him. He doesn't want to show his efforts before he's actually pulled it off - that way if he fails, no one will know but him.
Now, he wouldn't want you getting the idea he's some kind of sad sack! Stan's loud and boisterous and even when he was a kid his mother defended him by saying he has "personality". He's quick with a joke and has a way of telling stories about himself in a way where they make people laugh instead of worry. He doesn't like to take himself too seriously, and that's only become more true as he's gotten older. He cares a lot less about embarrassing himself or making a fool of himself, as he's embraced the attitude of "I'm old and I can do what I want!" - at least when it comes to things like eating a gallon of ice cream for dinner or yelling his opinions loudly with no filter.
He also has a very...skewed sense of morality, let's say. A significant portion of his life was spent on the road and doing anything he could to make a quick buck, so he doesn't have a lot of respect for the law. He's committed so many crimes that he had to start making up names for them (ask him about "burglebezzlement" sometime!). Stan's not about to go around murdering anyone, but he has zero qualms with stealing, whether it's pick-pocketing or looting a government agency for their toxic waste.
And why would he need toxic waste? Because Stan would do anything for his family. His years on the road were about accomplishing an impossible goal so he could finally return home, and then he went from that to spending thirty whole years trying to save Ford from the inter-dimensional portal he was knocked into. He dropped everything and made an entirely new life for himself centered around saving Ford. Did it involve a little identity theft and tax fraud? Sure did! But he would do anything, anything for his loved ones. He'd even have his entire identity wiped away to save them, if that's what he had to do.
However, on the rare occasion that Stan can see he's being taken advantage of by family or unappreciated by them, he quickly flips to furious and hurt, and he's very capable of holding grudges until the situation is made right. He can't stand it when he goes through the effort to try for someone only to have them dismiss it. However, once amends are made? It's like nothing ever happened. For someone who holds grudges as much as he does, he's very quick to forgive.
Overall, he comes off as a light-hearted idiot who doesn't care about anyone but himself, but as the show says in code many times, Stan is not what he seems.
Barge Reactions: Stan has spent thirty years in Gravity Falls, Oregon, which is basically a weirdness magnet. Sure, he didn't actively go out seeking any of the weirdness, but he knew it was there and knew how to deal with it (which was usually by ignoring it and keeping his mouth shut so that mind-erasing cult wouldn't zap him).
He isn't afraid of weirdness - "cautious" would probably be a better word for it. He very much likes being alive and having all of his limbs, so if he can opt out of something that seems dangerous he probably will, unless 1. there's money involved or 2. someone goads him into it (probably Ford). If it seems safe enough, or if there's something there to tempt him, he might be willing to explore a port.
Because of Ford and the portal, Stan's aware that other dimensions and the multiverse exist, so he won't be too jarred by the presence of non-human species or alternate worlds. Plus again, there were plenty of sentient non-humans in Gravity Falls. Some of them even holed up with him during Weirdmageddon!
I'm aware going in that there was a Stan Pines in TLV long before me. Stan will not remember his previous time on the barge; However, in canon he had his memory completely erased and was only able to have it restored by seeing photographs and video of what he lost. On the off chance he encounters someone who knew him the first time around, or someone tells him he used to be on the Barge, he probably won't be as surprised as he should be - he won't remember and no amount of evidence on the Barge will make him actually remember, but he knows he has a couple of gaps in his memory, so he'll actually readily believe it without much fuss. It won't be the same as actually remembering though, so he would have to make that CR over again.
Path to Redemption: N/A - Warden
Deal: Initially, Ford started out as an inmate because he didn't survive an encounter with a giant squid they had on the sea. Stan is going to be from the same timeline, but he survived the encounter. The Admiral approached him to make a deal to bring Ford back and Stan, seeing no other options and with nothing left to lose at that point, agreed.
History: Wiki!
Sample Journal Entry: Test Drive Meme!
Sample RP:
Five minutes ago, Stan watched his brother sink into the ocean.
Okay, well. Not five minutes ago, but it sure feels like it. Five minutes ago he was clutching the rail, yelling Ford's name into the sea. His stomach still feels like it bottomed out in his home dimension and didn't come with him to this space barge. It was so recent that if he stills he can feel the sway of the waves.
After that is sort of a blur of questionable decisions (but then again, is that really anything new for him anymore?). The important thing is that he's on this dumb prison boat and he's going to graduate someone if it's the last thing he does. He just spent thirty years saving Ford, and they only just made up - he can't just let go now, after all that! Not if there's a way for him to do something about it anyway.
He's eyeing his hand-bearing compass, musing over all of this and trying to-- well, get his bearings, when the entire barge shakes. Stan startles and immediately reaches for the nearest wall to steady himself. Then, an announcement rings out--
"Attention, passengers--"
"OH COME ON!" Stan bangs on the wall as hard as he can. "I just got here! Can't you let a guy settle in a bit?!"
Stan doesn't hear the rest of the message over his own yelling, and it doesn't dawn on him until afterwards that maybe that wasn't his best reaction. Either way, he knows the answer is no - he can't settle and he can't keep wallowing. They're taking on water.
